Household Carbon Footprint

Privacy statement

How this tool handles your information: what it collects, where it is kept, how long for and what you can ask us to do. It covers the Household Carbon Footprint only. Everything else Hyphora does is covered by our main privacy notice, and your rights are the same under both.

The short version

Your footprint is worked out in your browser. Your answers are not sent to us or to anyone else, and we never see them. The tool sets no cookies.

Who is responsible

Hyphora Consulting Ltd runs this tool. We are registered in England and Wales, company number 12904446, registered office 126 Crampton Street, London, England, SE17 3AE. Questions or requests go to Ben Hart at ben@hyphora.co.uk.

What the tool asks, and where your answers go

Your answers. How many people live in your home, what kind of home it is and how it is heated, your energy use or spend, whether you are on a renewable tariff, your cars and how far you drive, how far you travel by bus, train, tram and taxi each week, the flights you take, your diet, and roughly what you spend on clothes, electronics, furnishings and leisure. The tool uses them to work out your footprint, in your browser, and for nothing else. They are not sent to us or to anyone else.

Your IP address. When your browser loads the tool's pages, our host, Vercel, keeps short-lived server logs that include your IP address, as the main notice describes. Those logs do not contain your answers. Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in running the tool securely.

What stays in your browser

While you answer, your answers are kept in your browser tab, so going back or reloading the page does not lose them. Closing the tab deletes them.

At the end, you can tick a box to save your results to your Hyphora dashboard on this browser. It is off by default. If you tick it, your browser keeps a summary: your totals, the breakdown by area, and the figures the calculation used, which are the number of people in your home, your energy use by fuel, your car mileage, your weekly travel, your flights, your diet and your spending. It stays in your browser's own storage, where the dashboard on this website can read it, and it is not sent to us. Anyone else who uses this browser can see it. Untick the box to remove it, press Clear everything on the dashboard, or clear this website's data in your browser's settings.

Who we share it with

Nobody receives your answers, including us. We do not sell anything about you, we do not use it for marketing, and the tool has no analytics. Vercel hosts the tool and may store its server logs outside the UK, mainly in the United States. That transfer is covered by UK adequacy regulations or the ICO's International Data Transfer Agreement, as set out in the main notice.

The page explaining how your footprint is calculated links to the sources of its figures. Those websites have their own privacy notices.

We plan to add a way to buy carbon credits and a way to donate to a local nature project. Neither exists yet. Before either goes live, we will update this statement to say what, if anything, is passed on and to whom.

How long it is kept

Your rights

You can ask us to confirm whether we hold information about you and give you a copy, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to our use of it, or give it to you in a portable format. Because your answers and your saved summary never reach us, we hold nothing from this tool except our host's short-lived server logs, and you can delete the rest yourself as described above. Email ben@hyphora.co.uk; we reply within one month and there is no charge.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Changes

We will update this statement when what the tool collects, or how it uses it, changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised.
